Additionally, the speaker in the AirTag is now 50 percent louder, Apple says. These two things together address some user complaints that, as useful as an AirTag can be in ideal circumstances, sometimes it is frustrating trying to get things just right to find something. It won’t eliminate all edge cases, but it ought to help.
Apple used this announcement to also talk up some of the features of the AirTag, including the encryption that it says prevents anyone but the AirTag owner from using it, and an arrangement with airlines where users can temporarily give airlines the ability to use Apple’s network to find a specific AirTag to locate lost luggage and the like.
To be clear, the new AirTag doesn’t introduce any major new features that aren’t already offered in the previous generation—this is just an update to the device’s accuracy, volume, and range.
The price remains unchanged, at $29 for one AirTag or $99 for a pack of four. The new model is available for order on Apple’s website now and will hit physical stores later this week.
Pairing Bluetooth devices can be a pain, but Google Fast Pair makes it almost seamless. Unfortunately, it may also leave your headphones vulnerable to remote hacking. A team of security researchers from Belgium’s KU Leuven University has revealed a vulnerability dubbed WhisperPair that allows an attacker to hijack Fast Pair-enabled devices to spy on the owner.
Fast Pair is widely used, and your device may be vulnerable even if you’ve never used a Google product. The bug affects more than a dozen devices from 10 manufacturers, including Sony, Nothing, JBL, OnePlus, and Google itself. Google has acknowledged the flaw and notified its partners of the danger, but it’s up to these individual companies to create patches for their accessories. A full list of vulnerable devices is available on the project’s website.
The researchers say that it takes only a moment to gain control of a vulnerable Fast Pair device (a median of just 10 seconds) at ranges up to 14 meters. That’s near the limit of the Bluetooth protocol and far enough that the target wouldn’t notice anyone skulking around while they hack headphones.
Once an attacker has forced a connection to a vulnerable audio device, they can perform relatively innocuous actions, such as interrupting the audio stream or playing audio of their choice. However, WhisperPair also allows for location tracking and microphone access. So the attacker can listen in on your conversations and follow you around via the Bluetooth device in your pocket. The researchers have created a helpful video dramatization (below) that shows how WhisperPair can be used to spy on unsuspecting people.
On Wednesday, Elevation Lab announced TimeCapsule, a new $20 battery case purported to extend Apple AirTag battery life from one year to 10 years. The product replaces the standard CR2032 coin cell battery in the Bluetooth-based location tracker with two AA batteries to provide extended power capacity.
The TimeCapsule case requires users to remove their AirTag’s original back plate and battery, then place the Apple device onto contact points inside the waterproof enclosure. The company recommends using Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA batteries, which it claims provide 14 times more power capacity than the stock coin cell battery configuration.
The CNC-machined aluminum case is aimed at users who place AirTags in vehicles, boats, or other applications where regular battery changes prove impractical. The company sells the TimeCapsule through its website and Amazon.

As related on the TimeCapsule’s product page, the add-on case reportedly emerged after its inventor lost camera equipment to theft, discovering their AirTag had died months earlier due to a depleted battery. This experience led to the development of a longer-lasting power solution for the tracking devices.

After months of rumors and leaks, audio brand Sonos has announced and revealed its first foray into personal audio with the Sonos Ace, pricey wireless over-ear headphones that compete with the likes of Apple’s AirPods Max and Sony’s popular WH-1000XM5.
The Bluetooth 5.4 headphones were shown to select press outlets in New York this week. It’s too early to judge their sound quality, but they’re priced at the high end, and Sonos has a good reputation on that front.
Each cup has a 40 mm driver, and there are a total of eight microphones for noise control. Notably, the headphones weigh less than Apple’s AirPods Max.
Like competing pairs, they have high-end features like effective active noise cancelling and aware modes, Dolby Atmos spatial audio, and head tracking. The killer feature is for users who are already using Sonos’ other products in their home theaters: you can quickly switch from playing audio on the Sonos Arc soundbar to the headphones and back. That works for any audio from your TV, including set-top boxes or game consoles.
It’s a bit like how Apple’s AirPods Max work with the Apple TV set-top-boxes. Support for other Sonos soundbars like the second-generation beam is coming later this year.
Additionally, the Ace will get a new feature called “TrueCinema” that leverages your Sonos speakers’ ability to create a 3D map of the room in order to simulate the acoustics of your own space when wearing the headphones and using spatial audio, in theory making it sound even more like you’re just listening on a normal in-room surround system. That feature is also coming later in the year, though.
Of course, the timing for this announcement couldn’t be worse for Sonos. The company is currently tangled up in a consumer backlash after it updated its mobile app but left out several features from the previous version, including accessibility options.
The app update was intended primarily to make it easier to get in and out of the app and to do basic tasks like adjust the volume without waiting on screens to load or taking too many steps—and it succeeds at that, which is long overdue. But it doesn’t have all the edge case features its predecessor does, and Sonos is playing damage control with an angry subset of its normally loyal userbase.
For the Ace, the app is needed to do things like adjust EQ and some other special features, but it’s not required for basic listening tasks like adjusting volume or noise cancellation settings. Thankfully, Sonos has opted for physical buttons for those things instead of either touch gestures or an app interface.
The Sonos Ace will release June 5, and it will cost $549.
