‘Batman VR’ App Allegedly in the Works for Quest, FTC Filing Claims

Among documents released by the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) earlier this week is a claim that Meta’s VR studio Camouflaj, the developers behind Marvel’s Ironman VR, have also planned a Batman VR app for release on Quest.

The apparent leak was found by Janko Roettgers, formerly of Protocol and Variety. The document in whole can be viewed here.

“In September 2022, Meta acquired Camouflaj, which currently developing Ironman and Batman VR apps for Quest.”

The information comes as a part of wider antitrust investigation into Meta’s acquisition of Within, the studio behind the VR fitness app. You can read more about that here.

Last we heard from Camouflaj before the acquisition by Meta, the studio said it had “exciting things on the horizon,” maintaining it was still “all-in on VR.”

As early as May 2022, the studio was hiring for a host of positions to work on its “next exciting AAA project.”

A few months later the studio then released Iron Man VR on Quest 2, releasing it from its two-year exclusivity on PSVR.

Camouflaj hasn’t announced any new projects at this point either. We’ve reached out to Meta for comment and will update when/if we hear back.

‘Swords of Gargantua’ Studio Thirdverse Secures $15M, Aims to Bring Latest Titles to PSVR 2

Japanese VR studio Thirdverse today revealed it’s raised $15 million, something the Swords of Gargantua developer says will be used to expand global recruitment and develop new Web3 and VR titles.

In its latest round, MZ Web3 Fund has signed on as the lead investor, bringing the company’s overall outside funding to $33 million.

As an investor in Thirdverse, MZ Web3 Fund joins 8DAO, B Dash Ventures, double jump.tokyo Inc., Fenbushi Capital, FLICK SHOT, Holdem Capital, KUSABI, OKCoinJapan, OKX Ventures and Yield Guild Games.

The Tokyo-based studio says it plans to release more than 10 Web3 games through 2023 beyond its upcoming title, Captain Tsubasa – Rivals, and is currently recruiting more game developers to expand the development line.

As for VR, Thirdverse announced it’s bringing its latest sword-fighting game ALTAIR BREAKER (2022) to PSVR 2 at some point, which was initially released on Meta Quest 2 and SteamVR headsets in August.

The studio’s upcoming multiplayer tactical hero shooter, called X8, is also coming to PSVR 2 in addition to Quest 2 and SteamVR headsets. XR was developed by Thirdverse’s US-based studio.

Thirdverse says in a press statement it aims to “strengthen the recruitment of VR game creators for the development of new titles, scheduled for release in 2023 and beyond.”

resolution-games-to-host-vr-games-showcase-december-15th,-promises-“major-game-announcements”

Resolution Games to Host VR Games Showcase December 15th, Promises “major game announcements”

Resolution Games, the XR studio known for a spate of popular VR titles including Demeo, Blaston, and Ultimechs, announced it’s hosting its first-ever games showcase later this month which the Stockholm-based studio promises will reveal “major game announcements, updates and timely surprises for VR and MR games enthusiasts.”

The Resolution Games Showcase is slated to go live on YouTube and Facebook on Thursday, December 15th at 12PM ET (local time here).

Resolution Games founder and CEO Tommy Palm along with other members of the team are set to show off games, updates and more in what Palm calls “the single-largest news day the studio has ever had.”

“With the holidays right around the corner, we’re poised to see many more gamers unwrap a headset and immerse themselves into VR for the very first time,” said Palm. “Our showcase – which will be the single-largest news day the studio has ever had – will provide a warm welcome to new VR players taking their first virtual steps alongside the millions of players who already enjoy our games as we share new and upcoming fun they have to look forward to from Resolution Games.”

The company has previously revealed its fifth adventure module to its flagship title Demeo, Reign of Madness. The free update is arriving on December 15th for both Quest and SteamVR headsets, with a release on Pico devices in early 2023.

In addition to The Black Sarcophagus adventure which initially launched with the game in 2021, Reign of madness follows three other free expansions: Realm of the Rat King, Roots of Evil, and Curse of the Serpent Lord. Reign of Madness is set to introduce the grappling hook-wielding Barbarian as Demeo’s latest playable class, pitting you and your party against “their greatest evil yet,” the studio says.

The studio is also teasing that “Reign of Madness won’t be the only present under the Showcase tree,” as the studio is set to reveal a new title that will be playable on December 15th that Palm says “will be unlike anything we’ve released before.”

To tune in live on December 15th, make sure to head over to the Resolution Games YouTube page or Facebook page.

‘super-smash-bros’-creator-masahiro-sakurai-says-vr-is-“truly-the-perfect-fit”-for-some-games

‘Super Smash Bros’ Creator Masahiro Sakurai Says VR is “Truly the perfect fit” for Some Games

In his video series introducing aspiring developers to the basics of game development, Super Smash Bros creator Masahiro Sakurai recommends viewers give VR a try to understand what it does uniquely well.

Masahiro Sakurai has had an illustrious career in game development. Though best known as the creator and director of the Super Smash Bros series, the first game in the series was actually his fourth game. He first got his start back in 1992 with another franchise you’ve probably heard of… Kirby.

With 30 years of experience under his belt, Sakurai recently started up his own YouTube channel to share his game design philosophy with the world. The series, straightforwardly called Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games, covers everything from game pitching to game design to managing a dev team—all in bite-sized videos that are short, sweet, and geared toward aspiring developers.

Sakurai briefly touched on VR in one of his recent videos that focused on choosing the right field-of-view for a given game. Speaking of both VR’s strengths and weaknesses, he ultimately encourages his viewers to give VR racing games a try to understand what a VR headset brings to the table in terms of field-of-view and immersive first-person perspective.

In racing games, a cockpit viewpoint would probably feel the most realistic. And yet, I feel like most developers tend to go for something different [like a third-person point of view]. [First-person] can make the game hard to play, since the screen space available for actual gameplay ends up severely decreased [because of the limited view out the car’s windshield].

You could try playing VR instead, but the lower resolution will make distant objects too blurry to really see. That’s a problem when the player is using it to see more. And when driving in real life, you can glance sideways like this… but the only way to do that in VR is to turn your entire head.

Still, I recommend you overlook these downsides and give VR racing a try, even just once. Motion sickness is always a possibility, but for games that separate your viewpoint and direction of travel, VR is truly the perfect fit. Back to the topic at hand…

Despite clearly appreciating the unique experience that a VR headset can bring to a game, Sakurai hasn’t created any VR content himself. According to NintendoLife, back in 2015 Oculus offered to contract Sakurai to create a VR game, but ultimately he declined, citing the medium’s small audience size.

While the VR audience is still far from the size of mainstream gaming at large, it has no doubt increased significantly since 2015; I wonder what if Sakurai would make of the VR landscape today.
