‘megan-thee-stallion’-experience-is-a-stunning-example-of-live-action-vr-performance—and-the-closest-thing-to-‘adult’-content-on-app-lab-so-far

‘Megan Thee Stallion’ Experience is a Stunning Example of Live Action VR Performance—And the Closest Thing to ‘Adult’ Content on App Lab so Far

Megan Thee Stallion’s music might not be my personal cup of tea, but I know good tech when I see it—and I was floored when I hoped into the recently released Megan Thee Stallion VR Concert experience to find one of the highest quality VR live action performances I’ve ever seen.

The free Megan Thee Stallion VR Concert app includes one demo scene, with viewers given the option to purchase additional scenes in-app.

The app was developed by AmazeVR, which worked directly with Megan Thee Stallion to capture high quality 3D footage of her performances with a moving camera, making it feel like you’re floating right next to her as she sings and dances. The live action capture is integrated with a pre-rendered CG environment, and the app smartly adds some minimal real-time elements into the scene to blur the line between pre-rendered and real-time. All in all it’s a very well executed and on-brand take on a VR concert experience (though sadly missing the key ability to watch with friends).

The excellent capture quality actually made it ever so slightly unnerving to be that close to the artist, who in some of the performances is essentially giving you a personal strip tease. And while functionally there’s no nudity, the performance definitely couldn’t be called ‘safe for work’.

That in itself was interesting; Megan Thee Stallion VR Concert is only available on App Lab at this point, it is to my knowledge the most ‘adult’ piece of content Meta has yet allowed onto App Lab. Although App Lab is an official but unlisted ‘shadow store’ for Quest content, developers still need to abide by Meta’s content guidelines.

According to Meta’s content guidelines for Quest apps, full on erotic content is forbidden, but “when it comes to mature content (for instance, violence, alcohol/drugs, nudity, or adult language), we are likely to accept content that generally falls within the threshold of an R-rating for a movie,” the company clarifies.

This appears to be one of the clearest examples yet of an app toeing that line—thus, the Megan Thee Stallion VR Concert sets an important precedent.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen developers test the boundaries of App Lab. One of the first examples we saw was The Unity Cube, which tested to see if Meta would allow onto App Lab a technically sound app that was completely devoid of meaningful content. They did. Another app showed us that Meta would permit triple-digit pricing on App Lab—at least for a clearly legitimate app.

new-‘behemoth’-trailer-offers-a-glimpse-into-immersive-vr-combat,-coming-to-all-major-headsets-late-2023

New ‘Behemoth’ Trailer Offers a Glimpse into Immersive VR Combat, Coming to All Major Headsets Late 2023

Skydance Interactive, the studio behind popular zombie shooter The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners, revealed Behemoth back in October during Connect, showcasing a very brief teaser that left a lot to the imagination. Now the studio has released a longer cinematic trailer, which at least gives us a better idea of what the game will be all about.

At the Game Awards last night, Skydance Interactive dropped its first full-length trailer for Behemoth, an action RPG slated to release on all major headsets in late 2023.

Here’s how Skydance describes the new trailer:

“The cinematic trailer showcases Behemoth’s brutal yet tactical VR combat and breathtaking traversal gameplay as players conquer monolithic beings in a grim, unforgiving world.”

Granted, it’s a cinematic trailer with pre-rendered footage, so it’s probably not representative of actual gameplay. We’ve seen some pretty familiar combat mechanics elements in The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners though, albeit gussied up to appeal to the AAA crowd, so it’s likely we’ll see a lot of the basic interactions when gameplay is revealed at some point.

The studio also offered up some fresh info on what to expect from the story-driven game:

“In Behemoth, players will explore the plague-ravished wasteland of a once glorious empire, where its inhabitants are driven mad and cities have fallen to ruin. In glorious VR fashion, players’ bodies and minds will be tested as they combat towering colossal giants called Behemoths. Raw strength won’t be enough, however, as they must use various tools in their arsenal to defeat these gigantic creatures and the other nightmarish enemies that scour this brutal world in their quest for a possible cure.”

Behemoth is set to launch on Quest 2, PSVR 2, and PC VR sometime in late 2023. We’ll be keeping tabs on what promises to be another skull-splitting adventure from the makers of The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners.

‘noun-town’-vr-language-learning-app-offers-full-immersion-with-a-gamified-edge

‘Noun Town’ VR Language Learning App Offers Full Immersion with a Gamified Edge

Learning a foreign language typically requires some level of full immersion, meaning you spend a significant amount of time interacting with the target language in order to make the sort of transformative gains that allow you to function effortlessly in normal, everyday situations. That’s where Noun Town comes in, a gamified VR app that offers basic immersive instruction in six major languages, letting you interact with over a dozen NPCs who speak the lingo.

Ideally, the fastest way of acquiring a new language is by mixing with native speakers on a daily basis, although that can require significant life changes like moving to a foreign country, or constantly engaging with language partners online. Getting face-to-face with a native language speaker is also probably one of the most anxiety-inducing things to do as a beginner, which is where Noun Town looks to ease things.

Noun Town includes basic instruction in Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, French, German, and Italian. This includes stuff like numbers, greetings, questions, colors, and phrases to get you started on your language learning adventure.

The app, which features 1,000+ words and phrases in each target language, is all about learning by doing, as 16 voice-activated characters offer up basic conversations. Including seven mini-games, your overall objective is to bring color back to the island as you learn, developers realiaXR say.

Noun Town is now available on the Quest Store for $15, and is also set to launch on PC VR headsets via Steam on December 15th. There’s already a Steam demo available, which includes a good slice of the app’s reported “50+ hours” of content.

no-plans-for-‘fortnite’-vr-support,-says-epic-games-ceo-tim-sweeney

No Plans for ‘Fortnite’ VR Support, Says Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney

Fortnite doesn’t natively support VR headsets, and although rumors have been floating around recently that allege the popular battle royale shooter may eventually include a VR mode, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney says it’s not happening.

Update (December 9th, 2022): In an interview with Tim Sweeney from The Verge, the Epic Games CEO made it clear that the company has “no plans” for a VR supported version of Fortnite. According to Sweeney, it just wouldn’t work well:

“The thing that we do in Fortnite every day as gamers is run through an environment rapidly, and it’s the kind of experience that involves intense motion and doesn’t work as well in VR,” Sweeney told The Verge.

This comes as stark contrast to previous rumors, which alleged that code found in recent updates included mention of Oculus. The rumor, detailed below, was most likely a case of leftover residue from Unreal Engine 5 development. The original article follows below:

Original Article (August 30th, 2022): Update 21.50, the game’s fifth and final update to Season 3, is rolling out today, and it seems data miner and itinerant Fortnite leaker HYPEX has gotten a look under the hood, maintaining that Epic has added “stuff related to Oculus.”

We haven’t been able to independently verify this, however HYPEX, who is known in the community as a reliable leaker, surmises this could point to VR support being added at some point in the future.

If Fortnite can manage the go native on the Quest platform like HYPEX’s tweet suggests, it’s a pretty big deal. Fortnite on Quest 2 would not only stand a chance at eclipsing its largest VR-supported competitors Roblox and Minecraft, but also offer up competition to multiplayer VR experiences and games like Meta’s Horizon platform, Rec Room, VRChat, and Population: One (2020). In short, Fortnite getting on Quest could make it one of the most popular VR games there overnight.

Of course, there’s the matter of shoehorning the large-scale multiplayer shooter onto Quest 2’s modest Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 processor, which is a challenge in its own right. Still, Epic Games has been a big proponent of VR since the launch the original Oculus Rift in 2016, having pioneered VR support for its Unreal Engine whilst putting out one of the slickest VR arcade shooters to this day, Robo Recall (2016). It basically wrote the book on optimizing games for VR headsets, and is a founding member of the OpenXR initiative, an open standard for VR/AR app development.

In more recent years however, the company has focused on building its own Epic Games Store distribution channel and pushing Fortnite way past its original conception point as a free battle royale shooter. It now includes multiple game modes, a creative sandbox mode, and regularly hosts live events such as concerts and special in-game events.

Earlier this year Epic secured a $2 billion investment to stoke its metaverse ambitions, something CEO and founder of Epic Tim Sweeney said at the time would “accelerate our work to build the metaverse and create spaces where players can have fun with friends, brands can build creative and immersive experiences and creators can build a community and thrive.”

‘Drop Dead: The Cabin’ Aims to Bring ‘COD Zombies’ Style Co-op to Quest in February 2023

SoulAssembly announced it’s getting ready to release the long-awaited COD Zombies-inspired co-op shooter, called Drop Dead: The Cabin, which is now slated to release on Quest in February 2023.

The studio released a new developer update video during UploadVR’s Winter Showcase yesterday, showing off some of the game’s features, such as remixed pickups, different enemies, and how to survive ‘The Cabin’ by keeping lights and communications on by collecting fuel cells.

Check out the video below, which also includes a fresh look at gameplay:

The objective is not only to fend off waves of zombies, but also to keep the fuel flowing as you await extraction. With plenty of chaos at hand, it looks like you’ll need a friend with good aim by your side as Drop Dead’s cast of different zomboids rip down your defenses and lurch into the confines of the house.

While Drop Dead: The Cabin is set to launch on Quest sometime in February 2023, the studio actively hosting closed beta testing, which is accessible by joining the game’s Discord (invite link). It appears the current round of closed beta testing is already full, which notably requires users to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) to participate.

Another round is expected to open sometime in January however, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled on the Discord channel for more info.

The studio unveiled the games, titled Red Flowers and Stack, during the UploadVR Winter Showcase yesterday, showing off some very slick gameplay.

Both are currently available as a demo on Quest so you can get a taste of what’s to come. Check out the trailers below:

Stride Fates Story Mode

Stride Fates is nearly here, with the reveal trailer above announcing it will arrive on Quest and SteamVR headsets on December 15th. The story mode appears to be fully-voiced, including what feels like some very GTA-inspired lines from the game’s formerly helmet-clad baddies.

Joy Way says Fates will feature new parkour mechanics, new physics, and will tell a story from the life of a chaser in a linear hour-long campaign. It’s set to be a free update, which will also bring what the studio calls “important multiplayer fixes and enhancements, such as full-body character models and private lobbies.”
