Paris (France), June 7, 2021 – Outsight, a leader in 3D Spatial Intelligence, has announced the launch of the first real-time LiDAR solution for the forestry industry. Drawing on its established LiDAR expertise in other industries, Outsight has developed a mapping solution capable of generating a comprehensive 3D map of a forest in real-time. Taking no longer than the time needed for the human or machine operator to traverse the plot, Outsight’s solution automatically determines the exact position and characteristics of trees. On-site operators can digitally tag each tree with supplemental information, including species or the presence of insects, that can be used for further analysis.

This solution further builds upon Outsight’s expertise in the environmental and forestry sectors. In July 2020, Outsight was selected from a large pool of candidates to be a recipient of the European Innovation Council’s inaugural Green Deal funding. A part of the European Union’s Green Deal Strategy, Outsight was chosen for its LiDAR-based environmental and forestry management and conservation solutions.

Outsight’s solution is already being used by forestry researchers around the world. Esteemed forestry professor, Philippe Nolet, has been using Outsight’s LiDAR processing technology to assist in his forest monitoring research at Université du Québec en Outaouais in Gatineau, Canada.

“With Outsight, we’re able to complete our surveys of the forest three times faster”, says Philippe Nolet. “Then, when we’re back in the office, we have a detailed inventory of the plot with all our notes automatically tagged to each tree, saving us a huge amount of time.”

The solution has also been adopted by Outsight’s Hong Kong-based partner, Insight Robotics, a leader in the Forestry Risk Management sector. Using Outsight’s ground-based LiDAR tool to supplement its market-leading aerial survey solution, Insight Robotics can provide its clients with even more accurate survey data, allowing customers to better manage their forests and plantations.

Thinking bigger to improve the quality of life in our cities

There is no doubt that electric bikes are the most reliable and efficient alternative to cars. But, despite the significant uptake of cycling in affluent areas, it hasn’t yet developed enough in the areas where it’s needed the most.

According to an internal study of major French cities outside Paris, less than half of inhabitants live a 10-minute walk away from a self-service bike station. Additionally, ADEME and Indiggo find that three quarters of all self-service bike systems are in cities with over 50,000 inhabitants. We must accelerate the adoption of bicycles to all urban and suburban areas – to reduce transport- related CO2 emissions and noise pollution, to improve health and, ultimately, to make our cities more peaceful places to live.

An all-inclusive electric bike «as a service» offer – from short to long-term use

Smoove and Zoov are advocating the implementation of Augmented Bike Networks that connect entire cities, and are interlaced with public transport to facilitate multimodal journeys. These bikes can be rented on an ad hoc basis or can be privatised at any time for more frequent use. With this in mind, the group is unveiling the first self-service electric bike that is perfectly suited for long-term rental.

Fusion has a 65-kilometre range and, when being operated in self-service, can be recharged through the world’s most compact charging station. Each station accommodates up to 10 bikes, locked together with electromagnets – which also allows for the transfer of energy from one bike to the next. For long- term rental, the removable battery is secured by an electronic lock, giving the user the freedom to recharge when necessary and total peace of mind when leaving the battery in the bike. The custom-designed luggage rack ensures comfortable home-to-work journeys, and can also accommodate a baby seat.

The electric bike is controlled by a mobile app, allowing the user to:

  • Sign up to, manage or cancel their subscription at any time
  • Locate their own bike or a nearby self-service bike
  • Unlock and lock the bike
  • Unlock and recharge the battery (long-term leasing)
  • Follow an integrated GPS route
  • Receive theft or low battery alerts (long-term leasing)
  • Speak to customer service
  • And much more.

When operated in a fleet or shared bikes, Fusion can be unlocked from a payment kiosk or with a transport card thanks to RFID compatibility.

The company already operates a fleet of 500 self-service electric bikes in the city, with a satisfaction rate of over 95% since its launch.

The trial is conducted with the AMCR Institute Inc, a clinical research center focused on diabetes and obesity with worldwide renowned medical device expertise in the metabolic area. Based on a unique SkinTaste technology, the K’Watch Glucose will be the first wearable smartwatch medical device that measures and displays glucose levels continuously, effortlessly, and painlessly. This major milestone is partly financed thanks to grant and equity investment from the European Commission through the EIC (European Innovation Council) fund.

PKvitality has been chosen by the EIC as one of the top innovative companies to offer a unique solution to a major global issue: today, the diabetes population is estimated to be of 463M people and should rise to 700M by 2045. The K’Watch Glucose project aims to facilitate the lives of millions of diabetes patients by offering a painless and discreet continuous glucose monitor.

The Fossil brand Gen 6 smartwatch will be first to market, launching globally for pre-order for Android™and iOS phone users alike beginning August 30.

Gen 6 will also be compatible with Google’s new system update, Wear OS 3, announced earlier this year. The smartwatch will be eligible for the Wear OS 3 system update in 2022, alongside other updates that will continue to improve the overall user experience.

The new Fossil brand Gen 6 smartwatch launches with four colorways in a 44mm case and three colorways in a 42mm case for added size options. In addition to offering seven timeless styles and endless interchangeable strap options, users can customize dials and buttons to UNDER EMBARGO until August 30 at 8 a.m. CST to easily access their most-used functions. Fossil Gen 6 is upgradable to Wear OS 3, Google’s new system update announced earlier in the summer, and will benefit from continued improvements in features and user experience.

Qblox Cluster control stack is the go-to choice for the new 20-qubit quantum computer to put Sweden at the forefront of quantum technology. The Qblox fully-integrated control stack comprises dedicated and modular electronics developed in Delft, The Netherlands. 

In the Quantum Technology Lab (QTL) of Chalmers University, the mission to create their first 20-qubit processor began in 2018, spearheaded by Dr Giovanna Tancredi with Prof Jonas Bylander and Prof Per Delsing. This processors’ purpose is to solve problems far beyond the capabilities of any available supercomputer. The QTL quantum processor will be based on superconducting circuits, a widely-used technology for quantum computing.

In order to effectively exploit a 20-qubit quantum computer, the QTL decided to procure robust and scalable control and readout electronics. Following a thorough tendering process between various well-known competitors from around the world, the procurement contract has been awarded to Qblox because of its ability to surpass the requested technical requirements and its ability in scaling up in the future.

The Qblox control stack comprises a fully-integrated system providing all software and hardware components to control and readout their quantum device. The new Cluster RF modules were launched at the APS March meeting 2021:

  • Qubit control is managed by the QCM-RF module, which directly outputs RF signals in the range of 2-18.5 GHz. It integrates 6 AWG’s capable of generating complex baseband signals, two LO’s, and two IQ mixers. The module can self-calibrate its IQ mixer skewness, amplitude imbalance and LO leakage.
  • Qubit readout is performed by the QRM-RF module which includes LO’s, mixers, 6 AWGs pulse generators and digitizers for multiplexed readout in the range of 2 – 18.5 GHz. The QRM has advanced binning and averaging capabilities and can store up to 131072 IQ measurement results in a single experimental run.
